Editorial: Man's best ... dinner companion?

Local ordinances needed for dogs at restaurants

Florida legislators were not comfortable with a sweeping law that allows dogs on leashes to accompany owners at outside restaurants.

So the politicians did the next best thing. They approved a local option plan for dogs to tag along.

Of course, the success of any program like this is predicated on owners being able to keep their dogs calm around other people and pets. The folks at the next table might not be amused by Fido begging — or bugging their own dog.

And, of course, it will be up to each eatery whether to take part.

We can envision spinoff effects. Dog obedience classes are bound to blossom as more and more dog owners want to take Fido out to dinner with them.

Local governments, let's unleash the local ordinances that will get this moving forward. Those that don't will be in the — isn't it obvious? — dog house.
