Bonita council postpones decision on housing density fee

The Bonita Springs City Council chased its tail for two hours tonight trying to help the lack of affordable housing in the city, and ended up deciding to have another meeting.

"We're talking this thing to death. I'm tired of talking about it without any affirmative action," Councilman Richard Ferreira said.

The city was trying to come up with a new bonus density fee. Developers can choose to pay a per unit penality to build at a higher density when constructing housing.

The council suspended the program on May 15, which had a fee of $11,000, to come up with something that would help cure the affordable housing crisis.

Fishkind and Associates proposed a fee of $131,000, but several council members thought the fee was too high and were uncomfortable approving it without further details. Fishkind came up with the figure by subtracting a lower income from the median price of a house in Lee County.

The council ended up scheduling a workshop on the topic, which will take place after its 9 a.m. July 5 meeting.
