The newsletter from our board should have reached you by now and I am sure many of you were unaware that the clubhouse would no longer be used as a shelter during a hurricane. The key word is "during."
It will still be a gathering place after the storm if it is needed. The generator will keep the air conditioning running and the ice maker working. Many people have expressed displeasure and dismay at the thought of having to join the crowds at public shelters. I can certainly understand, but the alternative of staying in your home is too dangerous. Please plan early where you will go and how you will get there. We don't want to lose any of you.
The village is quiet most days and it seems like there are very few people here. The mail arrives and you can see how many of us are still in residence. The Memorial Day gathering was another example of how many call SCV home year-round. I have been experiencing a little of that pleasure the past couple of weeks and will for at least one more week. The weather has been beautiful for the most part, and we have had a few rainstorms that made grass sprout, flowers bloom and the fire emergencies slow down. I've received a few emails telling me that many of you have been enjoying Florida-like weather in your home state. I fear that has passed from what I see on the Weather Channel.
Remember that we are scheduling a trip to the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in Fort Myers on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, for the production of "The Lion King." If you would like to join us, please contact Bonnie Gunsallus or me as soon as possible. The seats will be mid-balcony. It is my understanding there are no bad seats in this facility.
We would like to plan some other excursions, but we need your input. Please let us know what you want planned, and what price range and time frame will be acceptable. We have not planned a major trip for the upcoming season but could still get one together if enough interest is shown.
Tuesday evening at bingo, we had a small but enthusiastic crowd. The first special, the Letter X, was won by Bonnie Gunsallus. The second special was split between Ron Hatch and Jerry Wobrach. The Coverall was split between John Landry and Rose Higgins. New residents Jerry and Jeannette Wobrach, made a night of it at bingo when Jerry finished the evening off by winning the Big Basket.
Thursday the bowlers again trekked down to Beacon Lanes for a fun afternoon. Vera Stivers led the ladies with a 197/476 and Ed Florian posted men's highs with 179/505 and had +25 over average. His lovely wife, Joyce, had +28 over average for the ladies. Ron Hatch and Joyce Florian won the Mystery Game.
That evening we only had two bridge winners. Jane Griffith and Faye Neely won the top prizes. Pinochle for last week had Joe Bohrer, Adele Boyd, and Jane Griffiths in the winning seats. This week we had some new names to report. Rita Gallagher, Edith Davidson and Herb Higgins were the winners and Faye Neely took home the door prize.
Bill and Elaine Elliott's son, Tim, has been at Hope Hospice Joanna's House in Bonita Springs. He passed away Saturday evening. Our sincere sympathy goes out to his family. Katie Miller is at home and Dot Sanderson is progressing and should be home in a couple of weeks, if not sooner. Your prayers for those mentioned as well as everyone else in our circle, will be appreciated.
I'm tying up loose ends during the next couple of weeks before I head back to Ohio, so here are a few things you might have wondered about: a new sign has been installed above the library shelves; it was the gift of an anonymous donor. It is very attractive. The house on Leilani that was badly damaged during the hurricanes is being moved out and another is scheduled in before the end of June; Faye Neely should be in her new house very shortly; several new people have moved into SCV and several long timer residents more have moved out. The hot tub is well on its way to completion and life as we know it at SCV continues. Keep in touch, please.
