Are you an art tycoon?

South American, Costa Rican and European artisans abound at Tycoon Gallery Etc.

Looking for some unique art for your home or just want to browse among beautiful objets d'art? Tycoon Gallery Etc., in suite 106 at the Esplanade, 740 N. Collier Blvd., has what you want. The gallery may occupy a small area, but it's chock-full (without feeling crowded) — it contains a cornucopia of visual art and craft.

Oil paintings and giclées line three walls and vary from abstract to cultural. (A giclée is a high-resolution digital photograph or painting scanned into a computer, then printed in the artist's pigments on canvas or other fine art paper. It closely resembles an original painting.) Colorful ceramics are everywhere — on shelves, tabletops and the floor. Grand-scale sculptures in stone or wood are dispersed throughout the shop. Jewelry — wearable art — is primarily displayed in two cases: one dramatically domed glass-and-mirror cabinet holds sterling-silver-and-semiprecious-gem pieces; the other exhibits 24-karat-gold-plated replicas of adornments found in the Museum of Gold in Colombia.

Pali Boland, a 20-year resident of Marco Island and owner of Tycoon Gallery, has established a venue for artists from different countries, especially South America, Cost Rica, Europe and, of course, the United States. Tycoon has been in business for almost five years — the first three years Boland was located at 217 N. Collier Boulevard.

"This location is much better. My clients followed me from my previous space and I've acquired new clientele here," says Boland, who was a stay-at-home mom prior to opening the gallery. Her three children — Vanessa, 13; Christopher, 12; and Sean, 11 — often accompany their mother to work when they are not in school. "Business just keeps growing every year," says the cheerful, attractive native Argentinean.

Tycoon Gallery Etc. is one of four galleries. The three original galleries are in Costa Rica and are run by Boland's parents.

Boland has no criteria for choosing her pieces — "whatever catches my eye," she says. She procures inventory from her parents' recommendations, local or visiting artists who drop by the gallery or buying trips abroad. No specific medium sells more than others. Boland's clientele are both browsers and serious buyers, some who may be searching for specific items.

Contemporary geometric-style oil paintings, large and small, are by native New Yorker Jerry Marder. Marder also shows in New York City, Palm Beach, South Beach and Holland galleries.

Missouri artist Lori Radford created the giclées. All of the images come from Marco Island and range from cool colors to bold.

Ceramist Jemma Ossenbach was discovered by Boland in Germany on a buying trip. Ossenbach's vivid masterpieces look similar to Italian pottery, but the hues appear more brilliant and the design is definitely one-of-a-kind.

Jewelry is abundant in Tycoon Gallery. Marta (just "Marta"), who lives in North Carolina, designs the semiprecious-gem-and-sterling necklaces, bracelets, rings, pendants and earrings. The stones include abalone, coral, lapis, turquoise, serpentine (a smooth, light-green mineral) and Andean opal — a captivating gulf greenish-blue that resembles turquoise, but is striated with iridescent colors like that of mother-of-pearl. Many of Marta's exceptional creations have matching pieces, such as a radiant, dark-red coral necklace and earrings.

Plan to spend some time at Tycoon Gallery Etc. — it has an extensive collection! Even off-season, Boland aims to please visitors who want to take their time: Summer hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 389-2204.
