Editorial: Car rental tax

Tax makes sense but roads need to get more of the share

Each of Florida’s 67 counties could get the option of adding a $2 tax per day on each car rental.

The local choice plan comes via the Florida Legislature and now awaits Gov. Jeb Bush’s verdict.

Because most of the proceeds could be used for each county’s roads, which are stressed by tourists at the busiest times of the year, this tax is close to a user fee — Tourist Tax II. Those helping push the demand for new and better roads would actually help pay for them.

We wish that all of the money would go for roads. It seems counter-productuve to have some of the proceeds earmarked for tourism. Then again, we wish some of the existing tourist taxes could be used for roads.

For now, what is important is that Bush lets this rental car premium come before voters, one county at a time.
