Editorial: Naples' transportation issues

Paint peeling on traffic signal arms, but things could be worse

The city of Naples is learning there are more transportation headaches than those dealing with major highway projects. City Hall is seemingly helpless to do anything about — ugh — ugly mast arms on traffic signals.

The city wants to repaint some of the 24 arms that are peeling. But Florida Department of Transportation officials have told the city to hold off, for fear of destroying the evidence against the pole contractor, Mastec of North America.

Thank goodness the paint problem appears to be affecting only half the poles. The vertical parts seem to be as handsome as the day they were installed five years ago.

Annoying, yes, though other local government entities would give anything to have room for peeling pole paint on their lists of roadwork headaches.
