Huxman leads qualifying at Florida State Amateur Championship

Greg Huxman of Pinecrest shot a 1-over-par 73 to lead qualifying at The Club at The Strand on Wednesday for the Florida State Amateur Championship.

Rob Thorngate and Nick Santora of Naples and Brian Friederichs of Boca Raton each shot 75s to tie for second and advance. Jacques Legere of Fort Myers (76), Lee Booker of Naples (77), Richard McPhail of Bonita Springs (77), and Bruce Sands of Fort Myers (77) also advanced to the State Amateur, which is June 22-25 at Pine Tree Golf Club in Boynton Beach.

David Keepler of Fort Myers (78) is first alternate, and Christopher Chaney of Sanibel (79) is second alternate.

Loren and Gregory David qualified at Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club, also on Wednesday. Loren David shot a 77, while Gregory David shot a 78 and survived a three-way playoff for the final two spots.

-- WILSON ADVANCES: Fort Myers’ Sammy Sue Wilson won her Championship Flight consolation match, 2 and 1, over Susan Rheney of Greensboro, Ga., on Wednesday at the Women’s Southern Amateur Championship at The Country Club of North Carolina.

Naples’ Shelley Hopper lost her Fifth Flight consolation match, 5 and 3, to Peggy Yountz of Cornelius, N.C.
