Man gets 5 years in fatal Alligator Alley crash

A 22-year-old Bonita Springs man was sentenced to five years in prison today after pleading no contest to DUI manslaughter in the 2004 death of a passenger during an Alligator Alley crash.

Julio Cesar Salas Garcia, of 26551 Noble Lane, was driving on Interstate 75 near mile marker 61 when he was involved in a single-vehicle crash on July 23, 2004. The location of the crash is about 40 miles east of the Collier Boulevard interchange.

Witnesses told Florida Highway Patrol troopers that Garcia tried to drive away from the scene of the crash, but the car would not start. A front seat passenger died at the scene.

Troopers took Garcia's blood alcohol content at the hospital and there was also a seatbelt imprint on his chest that led them to believe he was the driver at the time.

Reports say Garcia is in the United States illegally. He is undocumented and from Mexico, authorities said.
