U.S. 41 contractor to miss another deadline

The contractor widening U.S. 41 through Bonita Springs will miss yet another deadline.

Astaldi Construction told state transportation officials today the project won't be finished until mid to late July, and the road won't be open for six lanes of traffic until then.

The project is already six months behind schedule, and Astaldi is losing $6,078 every day in liquidated damages. The troubled project has seen delay after delay since Astaldi missed the first deadline at the end of 2005.

"We have indicated we want to see six lanes open as soon as possible," said FDOT spokeswoman Debbie Tower. "When we heard that we did let the contractor know we are, well, extremely unhappy."
