Commission: Bonita councilman can vote on plan

Bonita Springs City Councilman Ben Nelson can vote on the city's redevelopment plans for the historic downtown area.

The Florida Commission on Ethics ruled today that Nelson can cast a vote on the Antaramian plan to redevelop the 5.3-acre Bamboo Village on Old 41.

Nelson abstained from a similar vote in January because he owns property immediately south of the site. After the March 7 election brought on three new council members, it became clear Nelson would have to vote if he wanted the revitalization plans to proceed.

The ethics commission staff report recommended on May 24 that Nelson should be allowed to vote. He wouldn't gain a substantial benefit from the redevelopment of Bamboo Village. The ethics commission today approved that staff assessment.

The City Council will discuss the plans in a special workshop at 5:30 p.m. June 28. The plans from Naples-based Antaramian Development, Inc. call for upscale restaurants, shops and condominiums on the Imperial River.
