The Florida Gulf Coast University Foundation Board of Directors will meet next week to discuss current fundraising initiatives, including an effort to raise the $2.5 million that will allow FGCU to compete in Division I sports during its first five years.
The university's board of trustees voted in January for the athletics program to make the jump from Division II to Division I, a move that will take five years to complete and require the university to upgrade current athletic facilities and build new ones.
The foundation, which represents the fundraising arm of the university and has brought in more than $30 million to fund various FGCU programs since July 1, is now working on three major fundraising efforts, said Steve Magiera, the university's vice president for advancement.
These projects include the building of the Naples Center on two acres at the northwest corner of U.S. 41 East and Goodlette-Frank Road, a performing arts hall for the south Lee County campus and the music program that will be introduced in the fall.
"The music program is extremely expensive," Magiera said.
The foundation's Board of Directors will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the Student Union Building on the main campus in south Lee County.
