Flag Day

Gay pride
The Naples Chapter of Parents Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays will celebrate Gay Pride Month with book discussions at 5 p.m. June 17 at Borders Books Music Movies and Café, 10600 U.S. 41 N., Naples. The books — “Brokeback Mountain” by Annie Proulx and “Loving Someone Gay” by Don H. Clark —will be discussed. Information: 513-4568
Hurricane safety
-- A free hurricane safety seminar will be held at 2 p.m. June 20 at the Carlisle Naples Rental Retirement Community, 6945 Carlisle Court, Naples. Jan Bennett of the University of Florida Extension Office and Judy Nuland of the Collier County Health Department will discuss preparing for the hurricane season. Registration required. Achievements and accolades
-- Tara Albanese, a junior at Barron Collier High School, scored 2,390 on the SAT. Albanese received a perfect score on verbal and writing and missed perfection by 10 points in mathematics.
-- Ashley Victoria Flaherty, daughter of Jerri and Joseph Flaherty of Naples, is a state finalist in the National American Miss Florida pageant to be held July 8-9 at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress on Orlando.
-- Ariana L. Franco, daughter of Wayne L. Franco and William and Nanette Winn, all of Naples, has been named to the president’s list at the Ringling School of Art and Design.
-- Taylor L. Hoffman, daughter of Barb and Todd Hoffman of Naples, has been named to the 2005 fall and 2006 spring dean’s lists at the University of Central Florida. Hoffman is a 2005 graduate of Gulf Coast High School.
-- Tracie Christina Merrill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Merrill of Naples, was named to the dean’s list for the 2006 spring semester at Wingate University.
-- Mark D. Milligan Jr., son of Tami and Dan Cox and Mark and Lisa Milligan, all of Naples, was awarded the 82nd Airborne Division Association certificate and medallion for outstanding leadership, military and scholastic excellence and potential to succeed in a military career. Milligan is a junior at Florida Southern College.
-- Marc Anthony Rosa was nominated to represent Florida at the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) to be held in Washington, D.C. Rosa will be a junior at St. John Neumann High School.
-- Justine Megan Tinney, daughter of Lori and Brian Tinney of Naples, has been awarded the Harold and Sylvia Joy scholarship for $1,000 from Colorado State University. Tinney is a 2006 graduate of Barron Collier High School.
-- Brandon Wess, son of Michael and Karen Wess of Naples, sailed to Spain, Greece, Italy and Sicily on a work-study program for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Wess is a graduate of Gulf Coast High School.
Graduations
-- Steven R. Bechtel, son of Richard W. and Betsy S. Bechtel of Naples, graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va. Bechtel was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps and will attend basic school in Quantico. He is a graduate of Barron Collier High School.
-- Susan Bernabucci, daughter of Mary and David Bernabucci of Naples, graduated from Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School on June 8.
-- Todd B. Hoffman, son of Barb and Todd Hoffman of Naples, graduated with a master’s degree in business administration on April 29 from Florida State University. Hoffman will study at the University of Florida, Levin Law School in September. He is a 2002 graduate of Gulf Coast High School.
-- Heather Woodward graduated with honors from the University of Florida with a double major in philosophy and classics. Woodward was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and did summer studies in Rome and at Cambridge University in England. She is a graduate of Lely High School.
