Lee County Manager Don Stilwell nears 13 years on the job.
With Lee County government's reputation riddled with crime in the 1980s and with the manager's job seen as a revolving door, Stilwell has brought a considerable measure of stability and low-key aplomb to the position.
The fact that we don't always see his name in the headlines and featured as the county's big wheeler-dealer works in his favor.
One point that Stilwell brings up while reviewing his tenure is this fascinating fact: There have been only eight county commissioners, his bosses, since he started in 1993.
This can lead to a chicken-or-egg discussion. Which came first — an entrenched establishment or Stilwell? If the answer is Stilwell, he can take credit for calming the waters and making it possible for his bosses to benefit from public satisfaction. If the answer is an entrenched establishment, Stilwell would be its icon.
Either way, staying productively at the helm of any big operation amid rapid growth is an accomplishment. Don Stilwell has done it.
