DENVER — Dodgers closer Eric Gagne didn't attempt to throw a ball on Saturday, the fourth day of the five-day anti-inflammatory medication regimen club officials are hoping will alleviate the pain he feels in his surgically repaired right elbow whenever he tries to throw.
Gagne said he wasn't sure whether he would try anything today.
Although Gagne hasn't appeared in a game since Tuesday, manager Grady Little said club officials aren't yet ready to place Gagne on the 15-day disabled list, a move that would sideline him until at least June 22. The Dodgers are carrying 12 pitchers and needed only a two-thirds-of-an-inning stint by Takashi Saito on Friday night, which was the first game after an off day. Thus, the fact Gagne is taking up a roster spot but isn't available isn't a major hindrance to the club.
Gagne has appeared in a total of 16 games since the start of last season.
Rockies' DeJean faces shoulder surgery
DENVER — Colorado Rockies reliever Mike DeJean will have season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder and is expected to be sidelined six to eight months.
The announcement came Sunday after Colorado's medical staff exhausted other means to treat the 35-year-old right-hander's shoulder.
"My arm was sliding and I can feel it slide now," DeJean said. "The quickest way for me to get back on the mound is to have my shoulder fixed now."
