Ten area kids in Round of 16 at USTA state junior event

Ten tennis players from Southwest Florida moved into the Round of 16 in their respective divisions on Monday at the USTA Florida State Junior Closed Sectional in Daytona Beach and Sanlando Park.

Three of the 10 are in the Boys 18s division — No. 4 seed Erik Corace, No. 6 seed Peter Rispoli and No. 9 seed Nick Maurillo. Lauren Embree and Chelsea Preeg, the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds, respectively, advanced in the Girls 18s.

Naples' Amy Simidian, seeded fifth, advanced in the Girls 16s, and Bonita Springs' Amy Grossklag, the No. 10 seed, advanced in the Girls 14s. Joshua Dancu, the 16th seed from Naples, advanced in the Boys 14s.

In the Boys 12s, top seed Gordon Watson of Naples and No. 4 seed Brett Clark of Naples both advanced.

Naples' Orlando Ferrer lost in the Round of 32 in Boys 16s, and Naples' Jonathan Drew lost in the Round of 64 in the same division. Dan Howe of Naples lost in the Boys 14s Round of 32. In the Boys 12s, Paul Johnson and Alejandro Perez of Naples lost in the Round of 64. William Shisler of Naples lost in the Boys 10s Round of 32.

Alexandra Smith of Naples lost in the Round of 64 in the Girls 18s, while 13th-seeded Chloe Smith lost in the Round of 32 in the Girls 16s. Naples' Lindsey Raymond and Leslie Raymond each lost in the Round of 64 in the Girls 14s. Sophia Smith of Naples lost in the Round of 64 in the Girls 12s, and Naples' Nikki Kallenberg lost in the Round of 16 in the Girls 10s. Mikala Lowrance of Fort Myers Beach lost in the Round of 16 in the Girls 10s.

The tournament continues through Thursday.
