Banner publisher Steve Akers retires

Goodbye, and thank you

After more than 20 years as the leader of The Banner, I'm happy to announce my retirement as of today. The Banner has seen a tremendous amount of change under my leadership, but I've always tried to keep the views of the publishers of that first issue on Jan. 8, 1959: "A community newspaper for and about the people."

There are countless people who I've had the pleasure to work with and become friends with, both at The Banner and throughout the many organizations in our communities.

Y'all are the people who made my decision to leave so extremely difficult. I want to thank our contributors and advertisers for their support. And finally, and most importantly, thank you to our loyal readers.

Thanks, y'all, and God bless.
