Caxambas dredging sent to TDC for consideration

A project to dredge Caxambas Pass and place the sand on Marco Island's South Beach won approval at the Collier County Coastal Advisory Committee meeting on June 8.

Some 180,000 cubic yards will be dredged from Caxambas Pass, about a half-mile from the beach and moved to an area between Cape Romano and the Radisson Suite Resort.

Overall cost for the project is $1,660,961.

The committee's action goes to the county Tourist Development Council for approval as its funds will be used for the beach renourishment.

The TDC will meet June 26 and make its recommendation to the Collier County Board of Commissioners where the final decision will be made. Work is projected to begin in November, after turtle nesting season.

Gary McAlpin, coastal project manager, said dredging to provide the sand is necessary to widen the pass that has been narrowed and to meet maintenance dredging requirements by the state.

Subaquenous Services, Inc.

will be paid $1,581,400 for the project. Another $100,000 is expected to be added for fuel costs.

Humiston & Moore Engineers will oversee the project, including ongoing construction and post-construction reports.

They will receive $46,861. Sea Diversified, Inc. will provide pre and post-construction surveys for $32,700.
