A 4.39-acre mangrove parcel along the Gordon River behind Riverside Drive will be protected from development after Naples City Council voted Wednesday to purchase it from Collier County.
A stipulation for the $10,000 purchase is that a conservation easement be placed on the entire property. County officials originally estimated the property, just west of the Gordon River, was worth $13,200 but the lower price takes into account the conservation restriction, which reduces the property’s value.
The county’s real estate appraiser, Leonard Roosevelt, told City Attorney Bob Pritt that the value is based on two appraisals from 11 months ago that determined the estimated market value range for mangroves was $2,000 to $3,500 per acre. The city made the offer to purchase it on May 18 and council approved the buy Wednesday.
The purchase is part of a push by Naples city officials to buy small and large parcels to use as pocket parks or recreation. The purchase will be made final if the Collier County commissioners approve it Tuesday.
