Heat index today could surpass 100 degrees

Leave your umbrella at home and prepare for some sweltering heat.

Temperatures are expected to reach the low 90s across Southwest Florida today. Factor in the humidity, and it will feel more like the triple digits, the National Weather Service said.

The mercury near the coast is expected to reach about 91 degrees with a heat index of 101 degrees. In inland areas, the heat index could feel more like 105 degrees this afternoon.

A slight chance of rain is in the forecast this afternoon. Forecasters said a 20 percent rain chance is possible with partly cloudy skies.

The rain chance will stay in the forecast through the middle of next week with highs hovering around 90 degrees.

Records indicate the average high on today’s date at Naples Municipal Airport is 90 degrees.
