Miracle fall in Sarasota, 2-1

The Fort Myers Miracle fell a game behind Florida State League West Division leading Dunedin on Wednesday night, falling 2-1 to the host Sarasota Reds.

Fort Myers (36-30) went ahead in the third when Trevor Plouffe scored on a Sarasota error.

Miracle starter Brian Duensing didn’t allow a baserunner until the fifth, but four bloop hits in the sixth put Sarasota ahead for good.

The Miracle get another shot at the Reds at 7 tonight in Sarasota. Anthony Swarzak will face James Avery.

Following the All-Star break this weekend, Fort Myers plays a final three-game set against Lakeland to end the first half.

Slowey named FSL Pitcher of the Week

Fort Myers Miracle pitcher Kevin Slowey received the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week award for the second time this season for the week of June 6-12.

Slowey threw 14 shutout innings against Tampa and Clearwater, allowing seven hits while walking two and fanning 10 in two starts. He went eight shutout innings against the Yankees, giving up four hits while striking out five. On Sunday, he threw six scoreless innings, allowing three hits while walking two and striking out five.

The 22-year-old, the Minnesota Twins’ second-round pick in 2005, is 4-1 with a 1.10 ERA in 13 games this season.

Slowey also won the award for the week of April 24-30. He is the only Miracle player to receive a Player of the Week honor this season.
