Collier County Parks and Recreation officials have plans to build a new boat ramp access to the Golden Gate Main Canal on the northeast end of Golden Gate Community Park.
According to Joe Delate, senior project manager for Collier County Parks and Recreation, the project has been given approval but is in the preliminary planning stage while the county attorney's office works out easement issues.
Delate said unlike canals in the platted area of Golden Gate City, which are designated for boating, the Golden Gate Main Canal was originally platted as drainage, so the legality of boating uses must be researched.
He said the project is not currently budgeted and there is much to be done before residents will have a new launch venue in the area.
When complete, existing parking for the park's ball fields will serve the ramp facility. Delate said there is no room for additional parking to be added, but the size of the parking spaces may be reconfigured.
He said adequate parking would not be an issue on weekdays since most ball games are played in the evening, when the ramp will be closed.
Delate said the ramp will not include night lighting and will be chained off at night.
