Editorial: Army Corps of Engineers

Seeing the light, eventually

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has seen the light and reversed a policy that had closed the door on Everglades restoration planning meetings. That meant deliberations between the Corps and the South Florida Water Management District — held in advance of other, public meetings where spending and policy decisions are made — are once again open to environmentalists, business interests, adjacent landowners and anyone else who cares to come and see policy actually made rather than merely announced.

The credit for the reversal ought to go to Audubon of Florida and the Everglades Foundation, which took up the fight for openness and spread the word around the country.

If you want to look in on the plans for yourself, go online to evergladesplan.org.

The Corps is due some credit for doing the right thing. But not a lot. It should not have closed the meetings in the first place.
