Youth: Barron Collier girls lacrosse players get postseason honors

Three players from the Barron Collier High School girls lacrosse club received postseason honors at the St. Andrews School from US Lacrosse earlier this month.

Katie Gentle, a senior captain who plays defense was awarded Academic All-American. Gentle will attend Florida State University and play lacrosse for the Seminoles.

Alyssa Emens, a sophomore who received All-District honors, plays attack and was Barron Collier’s leading scorer. Emens also plays goalie for the Barron Collier soccer team.

Kendyl Davidson, a sophomore, received All- District and All- League honors and plays goalie. Davidson faced 300 shots on goal this season and stopped 193 of them for a .643 save percentage.

A total of 48 individual athletes and six teams from Southwest Florida have registered to compete in the 24 sports at the 27th Annual Sunshine State Games, which conclude Sunday.

More than 6,000 athletes were expected to participate over the four days of competition that started Thursday. Swimming participation is not included in the numbers as registration is compiled by Florida Swimming.

Leading the way for the Southwest Florida is Youth Track & Field with 19 athletes registered to compete at Tropical Park. Many of the 19 entered for competition are members of the DASH Track Club. The top three finishers in each division from this event will advance to the USA Track & Field National Junior Olympic Championships, which are being held July 25-30 in Baltimore, Md.

Also among the Southwest Florida teams is the Estero Hawks Baseball 12-and-under team, coached by Mark Marsala. The Hawks won the 11-and-under gold medal last year and were presented with their trophy at a Fort Myers Miracle game last summer.

The Alpha & Omega Ultimate team will be playing in the inaugural year of Ultimate competition at the Games along with 11 other teams. Schedules for team sports are available at www.flasports.com.

The Naples Football League, Collier County’s only full-contact, non-traveling, youth football program, is holding an open sign-up for ages 8 through eighth grade.

The sign-up will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Golden Gate Community Center located at 4701 Golden Gate Parkway.

(Bristol, Va.) Mountain High Running Camp announces the last opportunity for high school cross country runners to sign up for one of the two-week sessions in July. The camp features instruction by world class Kenyan and American runners and coaches and will be held July 10-15 and July 17-22 in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Bristol, Va.

This year’s class includes Fernando Cabada, who broke the American record for the 25k this spring; elite Kenyans David Cheromei and Solomon Kandie; elite American Fasssil Bizuneh and elite Slovak Petra Staskova among others.

The camp, which has had several high school cross country runners from Collier County attend in the past, is open to middle and high school runners of all abilities.

The Fort Myers Miracle baseball team will hold its annual three-day youth baseball camps at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers. Kids ages 6-12 will learn to run like Miracle players Alexi Casilla, hit like Garrett Guzman and pitch like Kevin Slowey. This year there will be two camps at Hammond Stadium.
