New BMI 'grade' will give parents vital information

School grades and FCAT scores are not the only numbers parents should examine.

As Lee County public schools amass a mountain of academic data, they also record the Body Mass Index of first-, third- and sixth-graders to help parents identify obese or undernourished children.

Some might ask: Don't schools already have enough to do?

As along as the individual test results remain private between the school system and parents, it's fine with us. Just as FCAT scores can be used to measure a student's achievements in school, the BMI totals can help tell the story of a student's health.

The public is, however, interested in the overal results and should have access. They can help Lee public school officials organize healthier menus for students.

Parents, when you receive a report this coming year on your children's BMI, take notice. It may be as important as any class grade he or she will achieve.
