Editorial: Roadside fishing

A tradition worth keeping amid the non-stop change

Fishing off bridges in Southwest Florida can be dangerous. Anglers are vulnerable to the same peril that motorists pose to bicyclists and pedestrians.

Yet, as is the case with bicyclists and pedestrians, it is worth the effort to save a place for anglers, too.

Not only is it a quaint, picturesque custom in Florida, but roadside fishing also is a symbol of public access to public waterways — which as we all know seems to be dwindling at every turn.

Thank goodness the Florida Department of Transportation is responding to resistance by Southwest Florida officials to a roadside fishing ban on U.S. 41 between Naples and Miami.

FDOT now is looking at adding paved walkways and other, safer venues for anglers.

Keep going, FDOT. This is a little slice of old Florida worth saving.
