$1 million approved for landscaping of U.S. 41 median

The median of U.S. 41 will soon give Bonita Springs a unique flavor as the City Council today approved $1 million worth of landscaping once the widening of the thoroughfare is complete.

The Florida Department of Transportation is paying more than $600,000 of the contract with Vila & Sons of Estero, and the city will cover the rest. The annual maintenace will be around $250,000, nearly all of which is paid by Bonita Springs.

The council decided last year to pay for an upgrade of the usual FDOT landscaping so the road would give a better presentation of Bonita Springs. The contract, which was opened on June 1, came in over budget at $1.2 million, but the city's engineering firm found a way to reduce that cost to $1 million.
