This week in 1976, the July 4 fireworks celebration was planned for the public beach off North Collier Boulevard at S.R. 92. The free show was sponsored by the Marco Island Jaycees and open to the public.
Marco Island Flotilla 95 of the U.S. Coast Guard sponsored a fish fry at the Marco Island Yacht club July 5. There also was a boat parade from the Marco River Marina.
In other news, 24 Marco Island boat owners won their battle to keep their boats at their dock while The Deltona Corp. dredged in the Collier Bay area. The Jacksonville district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers advised the developer that it could not block the use of canals that were presently navigable waters of the U.S.
The Deltona Corp. filed a libel and slander complaint against Joseph Bern and the Nizam Corp., a development firm headed by Bern, an Orlando attorney. Deltona was seeking punitive and compensatory damages of more than $2,500 from Bern who filed six lawsuits against Deltona. The complaint arose over Bern's alleged defamatory statements about Deltona to a Naples newspaper.
