Bonita council rejects veteran affairs board

The Bonita Springs City Council today mulled over creating a veteran affairs advisory board, but the idea was shot down for the time being as most members felt it was unnecessary and expensive.

Council members Richard Ferreira and Martha Simons floated the idea of a five-member board to meet four times a year to tackle veterans issues and promote awareness through events, such as parades and ceremonies.

While the other five council members said they were respectful of veterans in the city, they didn't feel it was necessary. Mayor Jay Arend said the city staff is already spread thin serving the other advisory boards in the city, and since the council just approved a historic preservation board, another would be too much.

Ferreira and Simons withdrew their request but said they wanted to bring it up again during the budget approval process. Both requested an evaluation from staff on how much time they spent serving advisory boards.
