A Comair flight experiencing rudder problems safely returned to Southwest Florida International Airport this afternoon, 90 minutes after taking off.
Flight number 267, bound for Cincinnati, radioed the control tower around 11:30 a.m. today to report problems and announce they'd be returning, said Barbara Anne Urrutia, public relations coordinator for the airport.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the airport's runway to await the CRJ 700's arrival as part of their "Alert 2" mode, Urrutia said. An Alert 2 prepares emergency crews for potential dangers during landing. The Delta-owned plane and its 67 passengers landed safely at 12:20 p.m. The alert mode was called off at 12:22.
It was not immediately known what caused the rudder problems, Urrutia said. A rudder controls the plane's steering from the rear of the aircraft.
Crews are set to examine the plane before decided whether it will take off again.
