Storms, heat in forecast on summer’s first day

It’s the first day of summer, but that won’t put a lid on strong storms that could develop again today in Southwest Florida.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued Tuesday evening for parts of Collier County after heavy rain doused the county. Naples Municipal Airport picked up 0.72 inches of rain on Tuesday, according to National Weather Service records.

Hail hit the Bonita Springs area Wednesday evening. The storm was strongest in south Lee and north Collier, although it did cause a marine warning south of Naples to about Everglades City.

Forecasters said a few strong storms are possible again today over interior South Florida and near the Gulf Coast. Storms again could contain gusty winds, small hail and cause flooding in poorly drained areas.

The high temperature today is expected to reach about 92 degrees with a heat index of about 100 degrees, the weather service said. The chance of rain today is 30 percent.

Naples has recorded 6.01 inches of rain this month, according to weather service records.
