Goodlanders, Marco Islanders and other summertime scene seekers, will converge on Little Bar Restaurant in Goodland to ward off the evil destruction brought about by our hurricane season. The participants, dressed in their finest evening wear — pajamas — will pay homage to the Atlantic Basin Hurricane Goddess, who provides protection (much like the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire, Pele, who presides over the volcanoes). The name of this annual ritual is Spammy Jammy and takes place from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, June 24.
The Hurricane Goddess is presented with gifts of "delicious cuisine, inspired art and cunning architecture" — all created with Spam! Yes, that pink canned "meat" (is it really pork?) product that precautionary folks used to store in their bomb shelters (I don't think the stuff ever spoils).
Prizes are awarded in several categories: food (about 30 area restaurant chefs will participate in the professional division to win the Spamerica's Cup), art, architecture and archeology. Additional prizes in the food category will be awarded for "showmanship," "kinetic" and "worst." Celebrity judges will actually taste all of the dishes.
If that isn't entertaining enough, talented and popular musicians will perform for the jammers. Merrill will perform from 6 to 9 p.m. and the Raiford Starke Band will follow from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Is competition your thing but your cooking is hogwash?
Try the famous "Toilet Paper Races" that our "Island Hopper" columnist, Tiffany Yates, participated in and wrote about a few weeks ago. It was a trial heat to see who would compete in the finals at Spammy Jammy. Unfortunately, Tiffany didn't make the cut, though she really went after it.
The event is more difficult than you might think and requires quick action and concentration.
Games of Spamopoly and Spin the Spam on the Monkey are scheduled and Slammin' Spammy Sosa, Little Bar's accordion player, will attempt to break the world's record for his continuous performance of "Lady of Spaim."
Spammy Jammy begins at 6 p.m., judging starts at 8:30 p.m. and the results will be announced at 11 p.m., immediately following the final heat of the "Toilet Paper Races."
The Little Bar Restaurant is at 205 Harbor Drive in Goodland. For more information, rules and entry forms, visit www.littlebarrestaurant.com or call 394-5663.
