Lee Memorial breaks ground on cancer center

In an overgrown field tucked behind a Steak 'n Shake and a Bob Evans, Lee Memorial Health System and local physicians made good this morning on their promise to make Southwest Florida a destination point for cancer care.

Lee Memorial officials and local physicians turned the first shovels full of dirt at the 5.8-acre lot that will be the 62,000-square-foot, four-story comprehensive Lee Cancer Care Center at the northwest corner of Interstate 75 and Colonial Boulevard.

The $20 to $25 million project, which has been in the works for eight years, should be finished within 17 months, said Duane Higgins, director of major gifts for the Lee Memorial Health System Foundation.

The Cancer Care Center is a partnership between Lee Memorial and local specialists, such as 21st Century Oncology, Florida Gynecologic Oncology and Florida Cancer Specialists. The cancer center will be part of a medical village with a surgery center and Lee Physicians Group based to the east of the center.
