Although not budgeted in the county's five-year plan, a portion of the Logan Boulevard extension is underway under public-private partnerships between developers and Collier County.
On June 15, residents got a look at the proposed design of the extension, which will connect Vanderbilt Road to Immokalee Road under an agreement with GL Homes. The company is developing approximately 636 acres just north of Immokalee Rd.
The two-mile Logan extension will consist of two lanes with a six-foot sidewalk and an on-the-street bike lane to be constructed on the east side of the road. An eight-foot multi-use pathway will be constructed on the west side of the road. Side road access will be provided at the entrance to The Cove and to Saturnia Lakes.
Rights of way for the extension were already in place as they were conveyed to the county as part of the requirement for a development order that was issued when DiVosta Homes developed Island Walk.
Officials said the extension is being constructed as two lanes in a four-lane footprint to accommodate future widening.
Under the agreement, GL Homes will be assured of having the traffic element of their concurrency requirements vested for the property they are developing north of Immokalee Rd., which is south of the Parklands project Ronto Development is building.
Construction for the extension is expected to begin this month and to be completed by June 2007.
According to Kevin Ratterree, of GL Homes, the company was under no obligation to build the road, but did so at the behest of the county, which wanted the road built sooner rather than later.
As part of the agreement, GL Homes will receive an impact fee credit for the money spent on the road construction and the county will receive what amounts to an interest free loan.
Under a similar agreement with Ronto Development, Logan will be extended from Immokalee Road to Bonita Beach Road. That project was halted, June 19, after the contractor began construction without all of the necessary water management permitting.
