The Tropic Wave 18-and-under girls fastpitch softball team traveled to Sarasota two weekends ago and won the annual NSA Dorie Locklear Memorial Tournament. It was their third tournament championship of the summer.
The Wave rebounded from two one-run losses in the seeding games to win the elimination round, which included an 11-10 win over the Tampa Mustangs. Tampa had defeated the Wave, 3-2, the day before. The Wave outscored their opponents 31-12 in the four games played on the final day of the tournament.
Christine Clark had five doubles, one home run and pitched a no-hitter, Felisha Taylor added two doubles and one home run, Amanda Leiter had eight hits and scored seven runs, Christin Carson chipped in with three doubles and one triple and Erin Beal had five hits and three doubles.
The Wave players are: Beal, Carson, Clark, Colleen Clark, Missy Gannon, Rikki Lee Larson, Leiter, Sam Mendello, Casey and Courtney Platt, Katie Schlottman and Taylor.

After finishing last weekend’s Key West Classic in Paradise Baseball Tournament with an undefeated record, the 12-and-under Naples Mustangs took third place at the Father’s Day Tune-Up for Cooperstown Tournament in Lake Worth last weekend. The Mustangs fell behind the Merritt Island Mustangs, 7-1, but Bryan Alfonso’s grand slam helped Naples gain some momentum and rally for an 14-8 victory.
Jordan Jackson’s single in the bottom of the 10th scored his brother Drew to help the Mustangs pull out a 2-1 win against the Parkland Pokers last Sunday. Naples was defeated by the Margate Titans, 6-4, in the tournament championship game.
The Mustangs will head to the Cooperstown Invitational Hall of Fame tournament in New York next month. The tournament is expected to include 96 teams from around the United States and Canada.
Alfonso, Dominic Blanco, Marlon Gallo, Brandon Gomez, Sam Granoff, Jose Hernadez, the Jackson brothers, Austin Peterson, Leo Rill and Al Smith make up the Mustangs roster.

Colin Page and Christopher Taylor, both of whom sail for the Naples Community Center, will be competing individually and together this summer. Taylor, 16, will sail his Laser Full Rlg at the U.S. Sailing Youth Championships in Michigan. Following Taylor’s return, he and Page, 15, will sail a Hobie 16 at the U.S. Sailing Youth Multihull Championships in Key Biscayne.
The winner of the Multihull event will represent the United States at the world championships in Canada. Page will travel to California in August to sail his Laser Radial at the 2006 Laser Radial World Championships, both being held near Marina Del Rey. In between events, Page and Christopher team up with NCSC graduate Hilary Noble as instructors at the Naples Community Sailing Center.

The District 18 Little League baseball all-star tournament begins today with the 11-year-olds playing at North Naples. The nine-year-olds begin on Monday at Golden Gate Community Park and the 12-year-olds travel to San Carlos Park to begin play on July 5. Both the seniors and juniors begin play on July 8. The juniors will play at GGCP and the seniors in Bonita Springs.

The USA South 16 Black Team finished in fifth place at the AAU National Volleyball Championships in Orlando last weekend. The USA South 13 Black Team finished ninth, winning the Classic Division championship. Over 400 of the nation’s top youth volleyball teams competed in the tournament. Both teams qualified for the USAV National Championships to be held in Atlanta beginning Wednesday.

Lely High School boys basketball coach Don Stewart will hold a basketball camp for two separate sessions at St. John Neumann High School. The first will be held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and the second session will be held July 3-7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There will be no camp held on the Fourth of July. The camp is for kids ages 7-14 and the cost is $80 each, or $150 for both weeks.

Mountain High Running Camp in Bristol, Va., announced the last opportunity for high school cross country runners to sign up for one of the two-week sessions in July. The camp features instruction by world class Kenyan and American runners and coaches and will be held July 10-15 and July 17-22 in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
This year’s class includes Fernando Cabada, who broke the American record for the 25k this spring; elite Kenyans David Cheromei and Solomon Kandie; elite American Fasssil Bizuneh and elite Slovak Petra Staskova among others.
The camp, which has had several high school cross country runners from Collier County attend in the past, is open to middle and high school runners of all abilities.
