See Rock'n Fossils at Collier museum
Collier County Museum has a new exhibit, titled Rock'n Fossils, bringing together hundreds of actual Florida fossils from the collection of the Collier County Museum, the Lee County Paleontology Society and numerous local fossil collectors.
Geologically much younger than the rest of North America, Florida was under water during the time of the dinosaur. During the ice age, Florida was populated by megafauna, large mammals that rival Jurassic Park's fictional dinosaurs in size, strangeness and ferocity. Collier County's earliest residents were lurking Saber tooth Tigers, the 20-foot tall Megatherium and the Volkswagen Beetle-size Glyptodont. Rock'n Fossils will be on display at the Collier County Museum now through July 30.
The Collier County Museum has four locations -the main museum location in Naples, two additional museum facilities in Everglades City and Immokalee, and the historic Naples Depot, a former train station and local favorite in the heart of downtown Naples. The main location is just five minutes east of downtown Naples at the Collier County Government Center, 3301 Tamiami Trail East in Naples. The museum's 5-acre plot includes a native plant garden, orchid house, two early Naples cottages, a logging locomotive, swamp buggies and a WWII Sherman tank. The main facility is open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is free and the site is handicapped accessible.
