FGCU ballplayers notch honors

Eight Florida Gulf Coast University baseball players were named to the All-Independents Collegiate Athletic Association's Division II team.

Senior third baseman Jason Louwsma was named ICAA Co-Player of the Year with the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown's Casey Long. Eagles second baseman/pitcher Casey Coleman was named Freshman of the Year. FGCU head coach Dave Tollett was named Co-Coach of the year as the Eagles finished the season 41-17 with a trip to the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament.

Louwsma was also named to the First Team All-ICAA along with FGCU junior Chris Hassen and freshman Josh Upchurch. Seniors Ian Manson and Ryan Williams joined junior Jason Kiley, sophomore Shawn Griffin, and freshman Casey Coleman on the All-ICAA Second Team. In addition, sophomore catcher Graig Smith received honorable mention.

Hester, Roig win AJGA titles

Dean Hester of Dublin, Ga. shot a final round 71 and went on to capture the American Junior Golf Association's Nike Golf Junior at Fort Myers tournament on June 15 at Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club.

Hester (72-71-71) defeated Bobby Wyatt of Mobile, Ala. on the third playoff hole.

Carson Weinand of Naples shot 82-78-79 for a 239 total. Phillip Boljanovich, also of Naples, finished with a 248 total after rounds of 83-83-82.

Estero's Ryan Klase withdrew before the tournament due to illness, according to AJGA officials.

In the girls division, Kyle Roig of Pembroke Pines won her first title in only her second AJGA event. Roig shot 77-72-74 and finished four strokes ahead of Carlie Yadloczky of Casselberry and Christina Miller of Bradenton.

Fun Fit Festival in Lehigh Acres

Fun Fit Festival, a hands-on Heart Healthy Expo for Kids, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, July 7, at Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres. Cost is $3 per camper. Parents are free. There will be several heart-healthy activities for ages 6-16. Dress to get wet. To RSVP or for more information, call 432-2159.

No. 1 pick to join GCL Twins

The Minnesota Twins announced Thursday that they have signed Chris Parmalee, the team's No. 1 draft choice in 2006. Parmalee is expected to report to the Gulf Coast League Twins in Fort Myers. Parmalee, 18, batted .407 with 11 home runs for Chino Hills (Calif.) High School in 2006.

Baseball camp

Team Turco Baseball Camp for ages 6-17 will be held at Estero High School July 10-14 and July 17-21. Sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Cost is $125 per week, or $230 for both weeks. To register, call Estero High baseball coach Frank Turco at 826-7088.

Mustangs to hold registration

Estero Mustangs Youth Football and Cheerleading will hold registration for the fall 2006 season on July 1, 15, 22, and 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mustang Field on Williams Rd. in Estero. The program is open to boys and girls ages 5-15 (as of Aug. 1, 2006). Cost is $135 for football and $160 for cheer. A current picture copy of original birth certificate, proof of residence (utility bill, etc.), copy of 2005-06 fourth quarter report card and physical dated 2006 are required. Former NBA player to speak at YMCA

Former NBA guard Wali Jones will host a free basketball clinic at the Bonita Springs YMCA on Aug. 5 from 3-5 p.m. Jones works for Tournament of Champions, Inc. For more information, call 813-340-7657.

Fitness program at Wa-Ke Hatchee

Boys and girls ages 11-13 are invited to participate in a wellness and fitness program at Wa-Ke Hatchee Recreation Center, 16760 Bass Road in Fort Myers. The three day, nine-hour program will assist youths in developing a healthy lifestyle plan that will cover the impact of positive and negative peer pressure, low/high self esteem, the seven healthy lifestyle factors, the decision-making process and how to identify healthy lifetime activities through recreation and fitness. All activities will be age appropriate. Sessions are July 11, 18, and 25 from 2-5 p.m. in the Lexington Middle School complex off Summerlin Road. Cost is $10. To register, call 432-2154.
