Editorial: Babcock Ranch

When's it developer's turn to reach for his own wallet?

The developer of 91,000-acre Babcock Ranch in Charlotte and Lee counties is seeking $2 million from the federal government to pay for environmental projects.

The money could go for devising ecological curriculum at Florida Gulf Coast University, as well as study the Babcock land and compile an inventory of what's there.

All well and good, but we remember developer Syd Kitson talking of partnerships while he was conducting his fast-paced and highly successful campaign for project approval.

That included securing $310 million from the state and another $40 million from Lee County to set aside 74,000 of those acres.

We wonder when Kitson, who still won't reveal how much he is paying for the ranch, is going to put some of his own money on the table.
