Everblades sign first player for '06-'07

— Florida Everblades President & General Manager Craig Brush along with Head Coach Gerry Fleming announced today that the team has signed defenseman Steve Czech to a contract for the 2006-07 season. Czech becomes the first player signed by the Everblades this off-season.

Czech (pronounced CHECK), who will turn 24 on July 9, made his professional debut with the Everblades late last season. The Oakdale, Minnesota native signed with the Everblades on March 18 of last season and skated in 10 regular season games notching one assist and amassing six penalty minutes. In eight Kelly Cup Playoff games, Czech tallied five points (1g, 4a).

“We are real happy to have Steve back for another year,” said Fleming. “He showed a lot of skill and potential last year, and we feel like he’ll be a solid piece to have in place for the upcoming year.”

Prior to joining the professional ranks last season, Czech spent four seasons at the collegiate level with the University of Minnesota Duluth. In 164 career games with Minnesota Duluth from 2002-2006 he notched 64 points (10g, 54a) and amassed 286 PIM. His best season came during his junior year when he compiled 13 points in 38 games.

“Steve is a strong player on the ice and an excellent person off the ice.” Brush said. “With his attitude and work ethic, we are really pleased to have him returning for another season.”

Czech’s playing career began with two seasons at the junior level in the United States Hockey League. From 2000-2002, Czech picked up 10 goals and 23 assists in 111 games with Waterloo, Rochester and Topeka.
