Bonita mayor threatens to end council meeting

Bonita Springs Mayor Jay Arend has three times threatened to shut down a City Council workshop about downtown redevelopment because the crowd was getting unruly.

After two sets of applause and one collective moan during comments made by different city officials, Arend, who runs the council meetings, warned that if it kept up, he would make it a closed meeting or move it to a different day.

"We have people up here who are making important decisions on how they feel," Arend said.

The council is discussing its plans for downtown redevelopment. At the heart of the debate is the proposal from Naples-based Antaramian Development, Inc. to turn the 5.3-acre Bamboo Village site into the upscale Imperial Landing with shops, restaurants and condominiums.
