Walks and rides

-- A 5k Run/Walk at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Community School of Naples, 13275 Livingston Road, Naples, will benefit the Desmoid Tumor Research Foundation. $25 (adults); $15 (kids). Information: 784-2457

-- Sponsors are needed for the 70-mile bike ride by 70-year-old Bill Curtis on July 9. All proceeds will benefit the Humane Society of Lee County. Information: (239) 332-0364, ext. 303

Book drive

Barnes & Noble Booksellers is sponsoring a book drive to help rebuild the libraries in the Louisiana and Mississippi schools damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Books suitable for children in kindergarten through 12th grade can be purchased and left with the cashier at Barnes & Noble, 5377 U.S. 41 N., Naples. Donated books will be delivered to the schools in August. The store will also donate a percentage of the sales from the donated books as a cash contribution to the schools. Information: 597-5200

Golf tournaments

-- The Joel Ingersoll Memorial Scholarship tournament for Johnson & Wales University will be held at 8 a.m. July 16, at Pelican Marsh Golf Club, 1810 Persimmon Drive, Naples. Registration begins at 7:30 p.m. The event includes continental breakfast, buffet lunch, raffles and an auction. $125. Information: 591-3528 or 269-8633

-- Alcoholics Anonymous Serenity Club facilities will benefit from the tournament at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 19, at Vanderbilt Country Club, 8350 Danbury Blvd., Naples. Lunch and awards follow the tournament. $75. Information: 304-4401

Pet portraits

Photographer John Sciarrino is reducing his sitting fee for pets from July 21-29 and donating the proceeds to Collier County Humane Society. Appointments are required. $25. Information: 263-2229

Volunteers needed

Habitat for Humanity of Lee County needs volunteers to work on home construction Tuesdays through Saturdays. Habitat construction supervisors will teach you what you need to know and tools will be provided. Information: (239) 652-0434, ext. 214

Good deeds

-- Royal Scoop Homemade Ice Cream, 15 Eighth St., Bonita Springs will donate proceeds from the ice cream sold at the Bonita Springs Independence Day Parade on July 4 to the Children’s Hospital in Fort Myers.

-- The Naples Relay for Life raised $650,000 for the American Cancer Society. Audubon CARES was the top team with donations and pledges of $124,198. Pulte Homes/DiVosta Homes was the top corporate team with $95,403 in donations and pledges.

-- Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar will donate $30 gift certificates to 300 foster parents and their families in Lee, Collier and Charlotte counties.

-- The Realtor Association of Greater Fort Myers and the Beach Inc. will distribute more than $38,000 to its Crisis Foundation, Lee Cancer Care and Teen Challenge on July 7. The money was raised during the association’s golf tournament on April 28.

-- The League Club has awarded the David Lawrence Foundation a $10,000 grant from its Community Trust Fund. The grant will be used to purchase a new vehicle to provide outreach services to the geriatric population.
