Firefighters sink bus in lake to help with searches

Firefighters sunk a school bus in East Naples this morning to be used as an underwater search and rescue device for Collier emergency personnel.

Officials gathered at 10 a.m. at Sugden Park off U.S. 41 East to send a salvaged school bus to the bottom of Lake Avalon. The East Naples Fire Dive Rescue Team, along with other fire departments, sunk the bus for use by any emergency services agency in Collier County.

Firefighters received the bus in January and had to prepare the bus for its new underwater home. Workers had to comply with several safety and environmental requirements to keep the bus underwater permanently.

This morning, the bus was lifted by a crane, then lowered into the lake, where it now rests about 30 feet deep.

The bus was provided by the Collier County Public Schools Transportation Department and the site was offered by the Collier County Parks and Recreation Department.
