At least 19 homes will be taken to make way for an eastward extension of Vanderbilt Beach Road, under a plan Collier County commissioners approved in April over the objection of hundreds of irate residents. Commissioners Tom Henning and Donna Fiala said the extension, which is slated to extend from Olde Florida Golf course to DeSoto Boulevard, will help people who need to evacuate in an emergency such as fires or hurricanes.
