Red tide killing fish in Lee

Red tide is killing thousands of fish off the Lee County coast and in area estuaries, including San Carlos and Estero bays.

State researchers detected medium concentrations of Karenia brevis, the organism that causes red tide, in the Caloosahatchee estuaries on Thursday. Florida Wildlife Research Institute published the results of those tests today.

Medium concentrations of red tide normally cause fish kills.

Cindy Heil, red tide specialist with FWRI, said she could not predict whether the bloom would increase in concentration, but she said finding it concentrated in San Carlos Bay is odd.
