Two men were arrested late Thursday on suspicion of racing their vehicles on Airport-Pulling Road.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy in an unmarked vehicle pulled up to the intersection of Airport-Pulling and Davis Boulevard at about 11:30 p.m. The deputy was behind a black Dodge Neon SRT driven by Joan Arturo Castillo, 32, of 1000 Manatee Road, No. 204.

A teal Pontiac Firebird driven by Jose Pizano, 20, of 5313 Hardee St., was in the adjacent lane, authorities said.

When the light turned green, both vehicles accelerated rapidly, reaching speeds of 80 mph on Airport-Pulling, the Sheriff’s Office said. The two men slowed to about 60 mph as they went through Airport-Pulling’s intersections with Radio Road and Golden Gate Parkway, deputies said.

The deputy stopped the Neon at Airport-Pulling and Pine Ridge Road and asked for another deputy to stop the Firebird because the driver had turned west on Pine Ridge. The Firebird was stopped at Pine Ridge and Yahl Street.

Pizano and Castillo were charged with racing on public roads, which is a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison.
