Prep of the Week: Zampell trying for another title

Barron Collier sophomore Erin Zampell doesn't look like she's done collecting medals just yet. The gold one she got from helping the Cougars girls basketball team to the Class 5A state title? That might just be the first one. Zampell's putting herself in a position to contend for some state track medals as well.

Zampell won the shot put and finished second in the discus at this past weekend's Walt Disney Invitational in Orlando, a performance that earned her the honor of Naples Daily News Prep of the Week.

Zampell's winning shot put was 37 feet, one-quarter inch, nearly three feet better than her closest competitor. Her silver medal discus throw touched down at 115 feet, six inches, just four inches away from first place.

Barron head girls track coach Ron Taylor said that discus throw came after a couple of throws just tweaking her form. That ability to learn, Taylor said, is what makes her so formidable in the field.

"She's definitely coachable," Taylor said. "Whatever you ask her to do, she'll do 100 percent. I think the sky's the limit for her. She got into track and field just learning and she's only going to get better and better."

Taylor said what will serve Zampell the best is her drive to get better and the intensity she shows in that quest.

"She was like an enforcer in basketball," Taylor said. "She just wants to get it done."

Zampell led the Cougars boys and girls track and field teams at the Disney Invitational. The girls ended up placing sixth out of 30 teams, while the boys finished 17th. The girls finished third in the 4x800-meter relay and fifth in the distance medley, while Susie Rosabella finished third in the girls pole vault and Courtney Jacob was seventh in the triple jump. For the boys, David Merino was fourth in the 1,600-meter run, while the 4x800 relay team placed fourth and the 4x400 relay team placed fifth.

OTHERS CONSIDERED FOR PREP OF THE WEEK: Baseball player Ian Parry pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and just three walks in a 2-1 win over then-Class 4A No. 2 Estero.
