Collier County Parks and Recreation's family-oriented water park, Sun-N-Fun Lagoon, is on schedule to open June 21.

Although construction continues, Collier County Public Services Division spokeswoman Camden Smith said the park should open on time. The grand opening will take place at 4 p.m. on June 21, and those who attend get free admission until the park closes at 7 p.m.

The water park is one part of the 212-acre North Collier Regional Park, which has been under construction since November 2004. North Collier Regional Park is located at 15000 Livingston Road, just south of Immokalee Road.

Attractions at Sun-N-Fun Lagoon include a 38-foot tall water tower with three water slides, one of which drops into a lazy river. There are four pools including a family pool, a toddler wading pool, a children's activity pool, and a lap and diving pool.

"You name it, it's here," Smith said. "If you can't find something to do here, we need to talk."

Children's activities include interactive water features like water-dumping buckets, water pistols and a fish slide that squirts water.

The park is hosting an open house June 18 from 1 to 4 p.m., which includes tours of the park to give community members a chance to preview the park before it opens. Although all rides will be operational at this point, they are not open until the grand opening, Smith said.

The Parks and Recreation Department plans to expand the park by adding two more large slide throughout the next two years, Smith said.

In addition to Sun-N-Fun Lagoon, North Collier Regional Park includes an exhibit hall with an enclosed gymnasium, meeting rooms, a 6,000-square foot fitness center, administration offices for the Parks and Recreation Department, and a playground with a Calusa fossil dig.

When the park opens, it will include Collier County's largest handicapped-accessible gymnasium.

"The only area that won't completely be done is parts of the boardwalk area where park rangers will be taking people for educational series and our fields," Camden said. Baseball, softball and soccer fields are scheduled to open in the fall.
