Students claim more than $1 million in scholarship awards

Oprah Winfrey didn't give out a car, but students in the audience did receive a large reward.

Students at Lely High School accepted Bright Futures scholarships, military awards and scholarships from local community organizations May 18.

"The students are receiving kind gifts for hard work (they've) done this year," Principal Michael Parrish said.

Nancy Rose Spector, of Marco Island, applied for 19 scholarships. She received a Bright Futures scholarship for 100-percent tuition and $12,600 from community organizations. She plans on attending New College of Florida in Sarasota.

The students completed essays and interviews along with meeting the stipulations for each scholarship award.

Brian Fletcher, of Marco Island, received a Bright Futures scholarship for 75-percent tuition. He received $4,500 from community organizations after applying for five scholarships. He plans on pursuing a bachelor's degree in hotel management at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

The local organizations set the qualifying criteria for each scholarship and many took into consideration both merit and need.

After applying for 13 scholarships, Sarah Burbage, of Marco Island, received $12,820 along with a Bright Futures scholarship for 100-percent tuition.

"It's going to help a lot with college, it's very rewarding," Burbage said.

"The amount of money awarded is a true reflection of the commitment that community organizations have made to help seniors attain goals by being able to attend post-secondary institutions of higher learning," said Jerry Muenich, director of guidance.

Victoria Spaziani, of Marco Island, applied for more than 20 scholarships to help pay for her tuition at the University of Florida in Gainesville. She received $18,000 plus a Bright Futures scholarship for 100-percent tuition.

The grand total received by Lely students was $1,234,645.

"I'm very honored and surprised. Everything I've worked for the last four years is worth it," Spaziani said.
