Charter Middle downs Community in baseball victory

Pitching and defense are always keys to a baseball victory. Alex Galiana, Marco Island Charter Middle School baseball coach, was very happy Friday because the night before the Eagles had done both in downing Community School of Naples, 8-1.

The Eagles soccer team had a tough road game, tying Community School, 2-2.

"This may have been our best overall game of the season," Galiana said as the team moved its season record to 4-2. Kit Fowler pitched his second complete game for the win. He only walked two batters, while striking out five. The first — "Kit was solid in winning his second complete game," Galiana said. "We only committed one error in the game, which led to Community's only run."

Galiana credited outfielders Casey Canaday, Patrick Doyle and Hayden Hanscom for making good catches, while infielders Matt Gerhardstein, Jessie Cirillo, Steven Grossman and Dillon Prisco had solid games.

"Dillon made three or four outstanding catches on throws that were off the mark," Galiana said.

With two outs in the third inning, a Canaday single brought Marc Milk home to tie the game.

Max Galiana's hit to deep right center with two outs scored Marc Milk and Hanscom to make the score 4-1 in the fourth.

"In the fifth inning Community School walked 10 batters, leading to four runs, and that was all she wrote," Galiana said.

The JV team lost to Seacrest Country Day School, 10-1.

The Eagles soccer team recorded its second straight tie, 2-2 at Community School.

"We dominated, but their goalie played a great game," coach Jackie Sauter said.

Maggie Antaramian had both goals, with Yasmin Hauber recording an assist on one score.

"They had a pretty aggressive girl who scored both their goals," Sauter said. "The defense played well, only allowing three shots on goal, but two went for scores."

The varsity is now 4-0-2.

The JV team won, 2-0, with goals by Jenna Lundquist and Madeleine Bolsen. Cyara Kowalski was solid in goal, while Mary Gibler, Camille Richie and Kelsey Togher were solid on defense as the JV record moved to 3-0-1.

The soccer team is home for a 5 p.m. game on Monday against St. Ann at Mackle Park. The baseball team travels to Gulf Coast for a 6:30 p.m. game on Monday.
