The City of Marco Island and its police department have reached an agreement on a contract, city and union officials said Wednesday.
The new three-year contract replaces one that expires Dec. 31 and includes a mandatory renegotiation of salaries by the end of 2008, a clause both sides said they supported.
The contract is currently under review by the union’s attorney, Union President Andrew Delgado said, and needs to be ratified by both the city’s police officers and the city council before it goes into effect.
City Finance Director Bill Harrison said the contract includes an 11 percent salary increase next year for officers. Potential state property tax reform, which might disrupt the city’s budget, made city leaders wary of committing to more than one year in police salaries until tax reform’s impact became clear, Harrison said.
Delgado said the contract’s major sticking points were negotiations over benefits and department’s structure in the face of the uncertain impact of tax reform. Delgado expressed confidence the union would approve the contract following attorney review.
“If they bargained in good faith, we’re 90 percent sure it’s going to fly,” Delgado said.
