FORT MYERS The Community School girls basketball team was operating in full postseason mode on Saturday. And there were good reasons.
After yielding a game-opening three-point play, the Seahawks scored 26 of the next 27 points in a 56-18 rout of St. John Neumann in the Class 2A-District 12 championship game at Evangelical Christian School. It was the third straight district championship for Community School (23-3).
“We played with a lot of intensity from the start,” CSN coach Mitch Woods said. “The girls just wanted to really get this one for the seniors, to have a third straight district championship.”
“Community School’s an awesome team,” SJN coach Shannon McFee said. “There’s no embarrassment to losing to that team that’s out there.
“Our girls played hard. They panicked a little bit early. I think the moment got to them a little bit, and we showed our age.”
Jamie Navarro, headed to Georgia Southern, scored a game-high 20 points, while Sarah Wickham, the Celtics’ top player, was held to two points.
“She brings that defensive intensity,” Woods said of Navarro. “She brings that mental toughness. She just brings that edge.”
The Seahawks, who will play a home game against the District 11 runner-up in a regional quarterfinal on Thursday at 7 p.m., led 37-8 at the half and cruised through a fourth quarter that was played with a running clock. The Celtics (21-6) will play at the District 11 champion, also on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Last year, Neumann responded from a similar loss to the Seahawks with a strong performance in the regionals.
“We lost by four in the regional quarterfinal and we’re going to play well again Thursday,” McFee said.
